Ea are ca obiect studierea substantelor si a transformatorilor lor. Aceasta stiinta poate fi grupata in trei categorii: chimia anorganica, chimia organica si chimia fizica. Chimia anorganica studiaza proprietatile fizice si chimice ale elementelor si combinatiilor lor, precum si legile generale ale combinarii chimice, chimia organica studiaza combinatiile carbonului cu cateva elemente ( hidrogen, oxigen, azot, sulf, halogen etc.).Este srans legata de atomi (elemente chimice) si combinatiile lor, deoarece studiaza procesele de transformare a substantelor dintr-una in alta prin regruparea atomilor si modificarea legaturilor dintre atomi. Orice material este compus din particule mici numite atomi. Atomul este cea mai mica particula de materie care nu mai poate fi divizata prin procedee chimice. Atomii sunt alcatuiti din particule sub atomice electroni,protoni si neutroni. Protonii si neutronii(nucleonii) formeza un corp central numit nucleu atomic.Gruparea mai multor atomi formeaza molecule.Elementele sunt acele substante, in care fiecare atom are acelasi numar de protoni. Acest numar comun de protoni indica numarul atomic al elementului. Exista in totalitata un numar de 92 de elemente in natura: in atomii lor, numarul protonilor poate varia de la 1 la 92.Unele elemente se gasesc in natura numai compuse. Spre exemplu sodiul este un metal, care intra in legatura cu alte metale atat de repede incat niciodata nu poate fi gasit in natura in forma pura, primara. Cleveita este o varietate de pehblenda, cu un continut mare de toriu si lanthanide.&lt;br /&gt;Pentru obtinerea uraniului metalic, pehblenda se dizolva in acid azoti, obtinandu-se azotatul de uranil, UO2(NO3)2, care se transforma prin calcinare, in trioxide de uraniun, UO3.&lt;br /&gt;Prin reducerea acestui oxid cu carbune in cuptorul electric s-a obtinut prima oara uraniu metalic (MOISSAN*,1883), dar acesta era impurificat cu carbura de uraniu. Uraniu pur, pentru reactoarele nucleare, se obtine din tetrafluorura, prin reducere cu calciu sau magneziu foarte pure:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UF6 +3Ca → U+ 3 CaF2&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Se cunosc combinatii ale uraniului in toate starile de oxidarem de la +3 la +6. În istoria omenirii, el a fost cunoscut în regfiunea Golfului Persic încă din mileniile VI – V a.Chr., fiind multă vreme folosit la construcţii, călăfătuirea corăbiilor etc. Abia de la mijlocul secolului XIX-lea s-a trecut treptat la valorificarea lui industrială fiind mai întâi folosit ca lubrefiant, iar apoi în petrochimie. Petrolul este substanţă care prin ardere degajă căldură , este o resursă epuizabilă. Rezervele mondiale de petrol sunt apreciate la circa 134,5 miliarde tone.&lt;br /&gt;Ţiţeiul dezvoltă o putere calorică de la 5.500 – 11.000 kcal/kg, este uşor de exploatat şi transportat, iar prin prelucrare dă o mulţime de produse folosite în activităţile curente. După 1930, petrolul s-a situat pe primul loc intre resursele energetice, ajungând în prezent să reprezinte peste 45% din balanţa energetică mondială.&lt;br /&gt;Astăzi viaţa oamenilor este de neconceput fără existenţa petrolului. Cu toate astea, la data naşterii ei, în Egipt, pe la anul 300 d.C., ea era considerată o „ştiinţă a naturii”, o bază de cercetare a unor cunoştinţe medicale şi chimice. Abia în mileniul întunecat, după anul 1000, alchimia a fost considerată o preocupare vrăjitorească, şi aşa a rămas oficial până astăzi, deşi ştiinţa actuală îi datorează primele experimente chimice importante, realizate în laborator.&lt;br /&gt;Oamenii au folosit din cele mai vechi timpuri unele practici în care se petreceau fenomene chimice, fără a înţelege reacţiile care aveau loc: acrirea laptelui, fermentaţia mustului în vin şi apoi a acestuia în oţet. Vopselele extrase din unele plante şi folosirea lor la colorarea fibrelor de bumbac sau lână şi tăbăcirea pieilor a fost a doua etapă importantă, alta fiind extragerea metalelor din minereuri.&lt;br /&gt;În principiu, orice descoperire şi orice invenţie trec, în mod inevitabil, prin trei judecăţi de opinie preconcepute: 1. E imposibil (se spune), e împotriva naturii. 2. E o descoperire banală, fără viitor. 3. Noi nu mai concepem aceste substanţe ca factori alimentari de necesitate vitală, care sunt indispensabili proceselor vitale atât organismului animal şi sistemelor de organe, ci pe un plan mai mare, ca substanţe de care sunt legate pur şi simplu fenomenele lumii vii. Dacă este permis să alăturăm cuvintelor lui Pfluger „fără albumine nu există viaţă”, „fără vitamine nu există viaţă”, atunci se poate înţelege ce înseamnă progresele realizate în ultimii ani, în elucidarea structurii chimice a vitaminelor.&lt;br /&gt;Nu se poate nega importanţa lor pentru medicul de familie care vrea să le introducă în terapie. În medicină adăugarea substanţelor lipsă din alimentaţie sau a anumitor extracte, chiar în cantităţi minime, a putut compensa lipsurile alimentare.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Definiţia vitaminelor. Cavendish a arãtat cã apa se formeazã prin explozia unui amestec de hidrogen si oxigen, cu ajutorul scânteii electrice.&lt;br /&gt;În 1783, Lavoisier a repetat experienta, realizând pentru prima oarã sinteza cantitativã a apei. S-a stabilit atunci cã 2g de hidrogen se combinã cu 16g oxigen pentru a da 18g apã.&lt;br /&gt;În 1805, Humboldt si Gay-Lussac au arãtat cã apa este formatã din douã volume de hidrogen si un volum de oxigen.&lt;br /&gt;Apa naturalã constã în amestecul speciilor de izotopi ai oxigenului: 16O, 17O, 18O, cu cei trei izotopi ai hidrogenului: 1H, 2H, 3H.
